How to Frame and Hang Picture Frames Like an Expert

- Cutting mat
- Photos
- Archival mat boards
- Mat cutter with ruler
- Pencil
- Acid free tape photo mounting

Wide areas of wall benefit from groupings of smaller, framed art. Raise the impact of grouped pictures by using identical mat boards and frames. The arrangement here is very traditional with a symmetrical grouping of frames. This works great because you may have used frames that are the same size and colour, framing similar pictures and subject matter.
Step-by-step
- Measure the size of the picture to be framed and determine the size of the mat window. Using a pencil and ruler, measure and mark the window to be cut out on the back of the mat. A window in the center works best.
- Line up the mat cutter and rule on the line marked. With light pressure, drag the cutter repeatedly along the line until you get a good clean cut. Repeat for the remaining sides of the window. Using archival tape, attach the picture to the mat board. Place it in the frame.
- To hang your frames: Start by arranging them on the floor and messing around with configurations and spacing. Alternatively, use newspaper cut-outs to duplicate the size of your frames, place your main piece in the middle of the wall with removable tape, then arrange the other pieces around it. Move them around until you’re satisfied. Make sure you study the arrangement from the place you are most likely to occupy when in that room. Keep frames close together to maintain a tight focal point, with the center point of the middle frame at eye level. Each frame should be no more than 4 inches apart.
